Ghana issues travel alert after deadly attacks in Mali

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory to Ghanaians following deadly terrorist attacks in Mali, as insecurity intensifies across parts of the Sahel region.

Reports from multiple international outlets indicate that coordinated assaults were carried out on several military installations across Mali on 25 April, including in the capital, Bamako.

The attacks, blamed on jihadist militants and separatist groups, reportedly led to multiple casualties, including senior military figures, as well as injuries to both soldiers and civilians.

Media reports also claimed that Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed during the incidents, though state television later said he died from wounds sustained while engaging attackers. There were also reports that the country’s military leader, Gen Assimi Goita, was relocated to a secure location after his residence came under attack.

In a statement, the Government of Ghana expressed concern over the developments, describing the situation as tragic and extending condolences to the government and people of Mali.

“Violent extremism must have no place in our world, and we must step up collective efforts to end this horror,” the statement said.

As part of precautionary measures, the Ministry has advised Ghanaians in Mali to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential movements.

Citizens have also been urged to stay in close contact with Ghana’s embassy in Bamako for security updates and assistance.

In addition, Ghanaian traders and commercial drivers operating along the Mali corridor have been instructed to suspend travel until further notice.

The government says it is working with Malian authorities to monitor the situation and will issue further guidance as conditions stabilise.
