Mahama pledges worker protection as Ghana launches National AI Strategy

President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana will not allow technological disruption to sideline workers, pledging instead to equip citizens to play leading roles in an artificial intelligence-driven future.

Speaking at the launch of the National AI Strategy on Friday, 24 April, Mahama stressed that government policy would prioritise people over automation.

“We don’t intend to surrender our people to technological disruption; we intend to prepare them to lead in it,” he said.

The president outlined a framework for AI adoption anchored on inclusivity and responsibility, noting that Ghana would pursue a model that balances innovation with social protection.

“We will pursue a human-centred, inclusive and responsible model of adoption… emphasising not only efficiency but also resilience, sustainability and the centrality of the human person,” he added.

According to Mahama, artificial intelligence should be deployed to strengthen human capabilities rather than replace them, particularly in key sectors of the economy.

Addressing risks and opportunities

His remarks come amid global concerns about the impact of AI on employment, productivity and inequality, as governments seek to harness emerging technologies while mitigating risks to jobs.

Mahama said Ghana’s strategy would focus on ensuring that workers are adequately prepared through skills development and policy safeguards.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that AI enhances human potential rather than undermines it.

The National AI Strategy is expected to guide Ghana’s approach to emerging technologies, positioning the country to leverage innovation while maintaining a strong emphasis on human dignity and inclusive growth.
