Plan International Ghana has launched a three-year Youth Accelerator for Change (YAC) project aimed at increasing young people’s participation in decision-making at local and national levels.
The launch took place in Accra and brought together government officials, civil society groups, and youth organisations.
The project builds on the She Leads initiative and seeks to position young people as leaders and innovators rather than just beneficiaries of development programmes. It also aims to address challenges such as limited access to funding, restricted civic space, and exclusion of youth-led solutions.
Speaking at the event, Acting Country Director of Plan International Ghana, Frederick Tei-Nobi, said the project reflects the importance of empowering young people to drive development.
Project Manager Joyce Obenewaa Darko said the initiative will be implemented in Accra, Ho, Hohoe, and Jasikan, directly engaging youth-led groups and social enterprises.
The project will focus on issues including sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, climate change, teenage pregnancy, child marriage, and livelihoods.
It will also support young people through international advocacy opportunities, leadership training, and funding for social enterprises.
Plan International said the initiative forms part of a global programme being implemented in nine countries, with support from several international partners.
With the local organisations, including the National Youth Authority and women’s rights groups, pledging their support for the project, it is expected to impact millions of Ghanaian youth in decision-making.
