“My only ‘crime’ was a social media post” — Baba Amando recounts arrest, court ordeal

The Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani East, Baba Amando, has alleged procedural irregularities and rights violations following his recent arrest over a social media post.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (21 April), Amando claimed he was invited by police without being informed of the offence, only to be detained and transferred under what he described as “unusual and excessive” circumstances.

According to him, officers at the Bono Regional Police Command initially denied knowledge of the invitation, later indicating that he was being sought by national cybercrime authorities.

“I asked what crime I had committed, but they would not tell me,” he said. “I was later informed I was a high-level suspect and taken into custody.”

Amando said he was subsequently transported to Accra under heavy security and later informed that the case against him related to a social media post in which he allegedly altered the image of the president.

“That was my crime,” he stated, insisting he acted within his rights and declined to comment until his lawyers were present.

Court controversy

He further alleged inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case during court proceedings, claiming prosecutors did not initially seek a remand despite later developments leading to his detention.

“The prosecutor never asked for a remand, yet I was remanded,” he said, describing the process as “a cooked plan.”

Amando credited the High Court for later granting him bail, arguing that his rights had been curtailed at the lower court.

“At least another court corrected it,” he noted.

The NPP communicator also linked his arrest to what he described as a broader pattern of targeting political activists, particularly youth voices.

He cited previous cases involving social media commentators and party figures, arguing that the trend signals growing intolerance for dissent.

“It didn’t start with me… the youth are being targeted,” he claimed.

Authorities have not publicly responded to the specific allegations raised in the interview.
