AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has intensified its push into youth innovation and skills development after successfully hosting its maiden Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Bootcamp in the mining town.
The programme brought together 36 pupils from eight basic schools across the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipalities, who showcased projects developed during a five-day intensive training in robotics, coding, electronics and design.
The initiative, supported by the company’s Robotics Training Centre — commissioned in July 2025 — forms part of a 10-year socio-economic development plan aimed at building technical capacity among young people in the mining communities.
Participants, drawn from Primary 4 to Junior High School 2, were also trained in computational thinking, mechanical engineering, 3D design and problem-solving, with organisers saying the focus was on linking classroom learning to practical innovation.
Speaking at the closing event, Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the programme reflects the company’s commitment to “empowering people and advancing societies” through education and technology.
He said preparing young people for a digital future was critical, as technology continues to shape sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education and communication.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Alfred Koomson, praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that is equipping pupils with creativity and problem-solving skills.
The programme was delivered in partnership with the Ghana Education Service and the DreamOval Foundation, alongside local schools and STEM coordinators.
AngloGold Ashanti said it plans to expand STEM-related initiatives in the region as part of efforts to position Obuasi as a hub for innovation-driven education in Ghana.
