The Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited, Shaibu Haruna, has called on customers to report mobile money agents who charge fees for deposits into personal wallets, describing the practice as a violation of established guidelines.
Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, 20 April, Haruna said deposits into mobile money accounts are supposed to be free, but the company continues to receive reports of non-compliant agents.
“We are aware of this behaviour, but what we will encourage is that such incidents are reported to us, and we also take action on them,” he said.
He stressed that customer reporting is critical to enforcing compliance across the mobile money ecosystem, noting that the company has deployed field sales agents to investigate and address such cases.
According to him, these teams are tasked with monitoring agent behaviour, responding to complaints, and ensuring adherence to operational standards.
Mr Haruna further assured the public that robust mechanisms are in place to handle reports and sanction offending agents, as part of efforts to maintain trust and discipline within the system.
The practice of charging for deposits—despite being prohibited—has long been a source of concern for users, particularly as mobile money services continue to play a central role in Ghana’s financial transactions.
Industry players say strengthening oversight and encouraging user feedback are essential to safeguarding consumer rights and sustaining confidence in digital financial services.
