Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, has commended Ghana’s advancements in financial technology and digital infrastructure, describing the country’s progress as a model his government hopes to learn from and collaborate on.
Mutati is in Ghana leading a delegation of about 16 innovators and startup founders on a working visit aimed at fostering partnerships and knowledge exchange within Africa’s growing digital economy.
The visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in technology and innovation, as African states increasingly turn to intra-continental collaboration to accelerate digital transformation.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, 20 April 2026, Mutati said Zambia is particularly interested in Ghana’s fintech ecosystem and the transition from fragmented systems to integrated digital platforms.
“For us, the collaboration and things to learn are for us to deal with some of our own priorities in Zambia, particularly when it comes to fintech platforms. Because there are mostly systems, but we want to move from those systems to platforms,” he said.
He explained that building effective digital platforms depends on strong foundational infrastructure, highlighting Ghana’s progress in digital identity systems as a key area of interest.
“To do that, you need the fundamental and underlying infrastructure, and one of those is the digital identification. Beyond the physical fibre, Ghana has done a lot in that area. So we want to learn and collaborate in that area,” he noted.
Mr Mutati added that platform-based systems would allow Zambia to better integrate fintech services and other digital solutions already evolving in Ghana and across the continent.
“Once we go into platforms, then you can plug into what you are doing in fintech, and then also plug into what Ghana is doing in many other areas. So, I have told my innovators and startups, they should come here to be curious and discover,” he said.
The visit underscores growing interest among African countries to share digital infrastructure models, particularly in fintech, digital identity, and innovation ecosystems.
