Authorities in Ghana’s capital have stepped up sanitation efforts ahead of the rainy season, with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) partnering private sector firms in a large-scale clean-up and desilting exercise across key parts of the city.
The exercise, carried out on Saturday (18 April), covered major commercial hubs including Okaishie, the Central Business District, Kantamanto and Agbogbloshie, areas often prone to flooding due to clogged drains and waste accumulation.
Accra Metropolitan Assembly said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve public health, reduce flood risks and promote environmental cleanliness.
Private sector partners, including DP World Ghana supported the exercise as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes.
“Mentos is a big brand, and we are associated with freshness and so we partnered the AMA to make sure we clean the city. And this is not a nine-day wonder…we will continue with this exercise to make sure the city is clean,” said William Quaw, Head of Marketing at Food One, Far East Mercantile.
“And I would like to use this opportunity to call on Ghanaians to ensure a clean environment in order to stay healthy,” he added.
Sundar Hariharan, Sales General Manager at DP World Ghana, said the company remained committed to supporting sanitation initiatives aimed at improving conditions for traders and residents.
He said the company would continue to back efforts to promote cleaner environments across the country.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey warned that authorities would enforce stricter sanctions against sanitation offenders, signalling a tougher stance on waste management violations.
City authorities have in recent years intensified clean-up campaigns ahead of the rainy season to prevent flooding and disease outbreaks linked to poor sanitation.
