The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer has accused the government of President John Dramani Mahama of undermining democratic freedoms, warning party communicators to remain resolute amid what he described as growing intimidation.
Mahamudu Bawumia made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of NPP executives from the Bono Region, who visited him on Saturday (18 April), to express solidarity following the arrest and detention of party member Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando.
Bawumia condemned what he described as the use of state security institutions to silence dissent, saying Ghana’s democratic credentials were under threat.
“Ghana’s democratic credentials are under attack. Freedom of expression is being sacrificed for political convenience,” he said.
He urged party communicators to remain firm, insisting they must not be intimidated while continuing to speak out and hold government accountable.
“The intimidation can never break us,” he added.
The National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who led the delegation, said the party appreciated Bawumia’s support and assured him that communicators would remain steadfast despite pressure.
The opposition party has also announced plans for a demonstration in Sunyani on 22 April under the theme “Yensuro Ahunahuna Demo,” aimed at protesting what it calls attacks on free speech and democratic governance.
