Private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has expressed skepticism that former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe will serve jail time in Ghana despite a US court approving her extradition.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 April), Adofo said the US decision reflects the activation of an existing extradition agreement between Ghana and the United States, as well as Washington’s own national interest considerations.
“The United States looks at its own interests first. If it has no interest in the individual, then it allows extradition,” he explained.
While acknowledging that the legal basis for extradition appears sound, Adofo cast doubt on what will happen once Tamakloe arrives in Ghana.
He cited what he described as inconsistencies in the enforcement of court decisions, referencing past high-profile cases to support his concerns.
“I am absolutely convinced she may not spend any time in jail,” he said.
Adofo questioned whether authorities would strictly enforce the requirement for her to be taken into custody upon arrival, suggesting that political dynamics could influence the outcome.
He noted that although Tamakloe has the right to appeal her conviction, she should ordinarily remain in custody during that process.
However, he believes legal strategies and precedent could be used to avoid incarceration.
On the broader issue of cooperation between Ghana and the United States, Adofo emphasised that extradition decisions are not automatic but are driven by U.S. national interest.
He added that, in his view, Tamakloe has likely exhausted her legal options in the United States and will soon be returned to Ghana—though what follows remains uncertain.
