UG clarifies victim in assault video “not a student”, launches probe into security officer misconduct

The University of Ghana, Legon, has clarified that the individual captured in a viral video involving an alleged assault by a member of its security team is not a student of the institution.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 11 April 2026, the University said preliminary checks indicate that the young man seen in the widely circulated footage was reportedly apprehended on suspicion of theft and is not enrolled at the University.

The University explained that management has taken note of the video, which shows a member of the Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) allegedly assaulting the individual during the incident.

Despite clarifying the status of the man involved, the University said it views the conduct captured in the footage seriously and has since launched a full-scale investigation into the matter.

The statement noted that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and is committed to ensuring accountability while establishing the full facts surrounding the incident.

It further stressed that staff behaviour is regulated by strict internal rules, particularly in interactions with members of the public, and that any breach of these standards attracts disciplinary sanctions.

According to the University, its Consolidated Code of Conduct for Employees outlines clear expectations for staff conduct and provides sanctions for misconduct where necessary.

Management assured the public that should the officer be found culpable, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with University regulations and the laws of Ghana on assault, following due process.
