The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission has held a series of meetings with key institutions responsible for organising Benin’s presidential election scheduled for 12 April 2026.
The delegation, led by former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, met with officials in Cotonou on 9 April as part of preparations to assess the electoral process.
At the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA), discussions focused on the deployment of electoral materials, the management of polling stations and broader logistical arrangements ahead of the vote. The commission also briefed the delegation on security measures put in place for election day operations.
The ECOWAS team, which included Commissioner Abdel Fatau Musah and the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin, also engaged with officials of the Constitutional Court.
The court outlined its mandate in overseeing the legality of the electoral process and in validating and announcing final results after the polls.
Further engagements were held with the High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC), where discussions centred on media monitoring and the regulation of information during the campaign and voting period.
Officials of the HAAC briefed the delegation on steps being taken to ensure balanced and compliant media coverage of the electoral process.
The ECOWAS mission said the engagements are part of efforts to better understand institutional readiness and coordination ahead of the presidential election.
The delegation is expected to continue its observation activities in the lead-up to and during the polls in Benin.
