The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has launched its 65th-anniversary celebrations with a strong call for innovation, digital transformation, and a renewed commitment to public-sector leadership.
The event, held on March 26 in Accra on the theme “A Legacy of Excellence, A Future in Digital Transformation,” brought together government officials, academia, alumni, and students to reflect on the institute’s impact and future direction.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Staff, Presidential Advisor on the Economy, Seth Terkper, highlighted GIMPA’s critical role in shaping Ghana’s governance framework since its establishment in 1961.
He described the institute as a key pillar in developing public sector capacity, noting that many of Ghana’s current leaders, including nearly 100 Members of Parliament, are alumni.
He also pointed to ongoing government efforts to strengthen education, citing the 2026 budget allocation of GH₵33.3 billion to support access, infrastructure, and teacher development.
Emphasizing the digital shift, he urged GIMPA to align closely with national reforms to prepare graduates for a technology-driven economy.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, who served as Guest of Honour, described GIMPA as a cornerstone institution in Ghana’s administrative development.
Reflecting on its origins under Dr Kwame Nkrumah, he stressed the need for the institute to remain focused on its core mandate of training ethical and competent public sector leaders.
“As Ghana’s development depends on strong institutions, GIMPA must continue to lead in building leadership and administrative excellence,” he said.
Rector Professor Samuel Kwaku Bonsu highlighted the institute’s evolution from a public administration training centre into a comprehensive university with global reach.
He noted the wide influence of its alumni across government, business, and civil society, both locally and internationally.
However, he acknowledged challenges related to access and affordability, proposing scholarship schemes to support underprivileged but capable students.
Looking ahead, Professor Bonsu outlined key priorities including maintaining academic excellence, expanding access, strengthening partnerships, and promoting a global outlook grounded in African values. He emphasized the need for research and collaboration that deliver practical solutions for national development.
Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, announced a series of activities to mark the milestone, including conferences, policy dialogues, and outreach programmes. The main celebration is scheduled for June 1.
The launch also featured the unveiling of the anniversary logo and the introduction of a GIMPA Alumni Prestige Card to strengthen alumni engagement.
As the institution celebrates 65 years of impact, speakers underscored the importance of building on its legacy while adapting to the demands of a fast-changing, digital world.
