Eight ambulances deployed in Accra collapse rescue — Ambulance Service director

The National Ambulance Service Ghana has confirmed deploying multiple ambulances and personnel in response to the Accra New Town building collapse, ensuring the swift evacuation of victims.

Deputy Director Simmons Yussif Kewura told the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (30 March) that the Service received a distress call at about 1:36 pm and quickly mobilised eight ambulances to the scene.

“In total, about 20 injured persons were rescued and transported to hospitals, while three people were confirmed dead,” he said.

Kewura explained that although victims were initially distributed across multiple health facilities, they were later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital for more coordinated medical care.

He acknowledged operational challenges, particularly with access to the disaster scene due to congestion and crowd control issues, but noted that coordination with other security agencies helped ease the situation.

“Such incidents come with challenges, but through collaboration with the police and other services, we were able to carry out evacuations effectively,” he said.

Despite the scale of the emergency, Kewura maintained that the Service had sufficient resources to respond.

“We were able to marshal eight ambulances, which met the demand. We are always ready as an emergency response institution,” he added.

He reaffirmed the National Ambulance Service’s commitment to providing pre-hospital care and rapid response in emergencies, describing the operation as a coordinated multi-agency effort.
