The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing macroeconomic governance and deepening regional integration across West Africa.
The agreement was signed on 27 March 2026 at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, signed on behalf of the regional bloc, while Wautabouna Ouattara, Executive Director of the IMF for West Africa, represented the Fund.
The MoU establishes a structured framework to strengthen cooperation in key areas including macroeconomic governance, policy coordination and regional economic integration.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Touray said the agreement would enhance policy dialogue among member states, deepen coordination on macroeconomic and financial issues, and support capacity development in areas such as fiscal policy, debt management and statistics.
He added that the partnership would also reinforce regional surveillance mechanisms and support efforts to advance the ECOWAS Monetary Union agenda.
Dr Ouattara, on his part, said the agreement would strengthen the collective voice of ECOWAS member states within the IMF and ensure that the priorities of West Africa are better reflected in global economic discussions.
The partnership marks a renewed commitment by both institutions to promote economic stability and sustainable growth across the sub-region.
