Ghanaian business leader Sam Jonah has agreed to serve as lead champion of the “Make Africa Borderless Now” campaign, a continental initiative aimed at promoting free movement and deeper economic integration across Africa.
The campaign, led by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN), seeks to mobilise support for the African Union’s Free Movement Protocol, seen as a key step toward unlocking the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
In a letter dated 24 March, Jonah said he accepted the role “with great conviction and a deep sense of responsibility,” describing the initiative as long overdue.
“For too long, Africa’s integration agenda has remained the subject of eloquent declarations… while the colonial-era barriers that fragment our continent continue to exact a real and daily cost on our people,” he said.
Organisers aim to gather 10 million signatures to be presented to African heads of state at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa in February 2027, in a bid to accelerate ratification of the protocol.
Jonah said the campaign’s focus on grassroots mobilisation marked a shift from rhetoric to action. “That is not rhetoric; that is a mandate. And mandates, when they come from the people, are not easily ignored,” he added.
As lead champion, Jonah is expected to leverage his international profile to rally political and institutional support, including engagement with regional blocs such as ECOWAS and the East African Community.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, chairman of the Africa Prosperity Network, said Jonah’s involvement would be critical to the campaign’s success.
“Your immense international reputation, credibility, and moral authority will be pivotal in amplifying the message and helping to mobilise leaders,” he said.
Only a handful of African Union member states have so far ratified the Free Movement Protocol, far below the threshold required for it to come into force.
Organisers say accelerating adoption is essential to achieving the goals of the AfCFTA single market.
