Mahama receives International Statesperson Award in Philadelphia

John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with the prestigious International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, in recognition of his contributions to global leadership and diplomacy.

The award, the highest distinction conferred by the Council, has been presented periodically since 1973 to distinguished international figures whose work advances peace, freedom, and global cooperation.

Mahama becomes the first African leader to receive the accolade since its inception, marking a significant milestone for both the institution and the continent.

Presenting the award at a ceremony on Friday, March 27, the Council’s President and CEO, Lauren Swartz, said Mahama’s career reflects the core values the honour seeks to recognise.

She cited his democratic leadership, commitment to peaceful political transitions, efforts to strengthen international partnerships, and advocacy for Africa on the global stage.

“The award recognises leaders whose impact extends beyond national borders, and President Mahama exemplifies these ideals,” she noted.

In his acceptance speech, Mahama attributed his commitment to global peace and development to the legacy of African leaders who shaped the continent’s political and ideological foundations.

He referenced figures such as Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda as enduring sources of inspiration.

The President said their vision of unity, justice, and self-determination continues to guide his approach to governance and international engagement.

The International Statesperson Award adds to Mahama’s global recognition and underscores Ghana’s continued presence in international diplomacy and leadership discourse.
