The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) will launch its 65th anniversary celebrations on 26 March, marking more than six decades of leadership training and signalling a strategic push into Francophone Africa and digital transformation.
Founded in 1961 through a partnership between the United Nations and the Government of Ghana, GIMPA was originally established as the Institute of Public Administration to train civil servants for the newly independent state.
It was later reconstituted in 1969 with an expanded mandate, and gained full autonomy in 2004 under an Act of Parliament, allowing it to award its own degrees.
The institution has since evolved into a multi-disciplinary university, offering programmes in governance, law, business, technology and social sciences, with plans to expand into the creative arts.
GIMPA says its alumni network includes key figures in Ghana’s public life, among them First Lady Lordina Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie and Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
As part of its future strategy, the institute plans to expand its footprint into French-speaking African countries, positioning itself as a pan-African hub for leadership and governance training.
The move will be supported by a broader push towards digital transformation, including a transition to paperless internal systems.
“As we celebrate our 65th Anniversary, we aren’t just looking back,” Rector Prof. Samuel Kwaku Bonsu said.
“We are stepping boldly into a future defined by digital transformation and expansion across Francophone Africa.”
The anniversary launch, to be held at GIMPA’s Greenhill campus in Accra, will begin a year-long series of events bringing together government officials, alumni, faculty and international partners.
GIMPA said the celebrations will focus on its legacy of leadership development while outlining a roadmap for its next phase of continental and global engagement.
