ECG uncovers power theft, recovers millions in Eastern Region

The Eastern Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as part of its efforts to maintain a stable system, invested over GHC 7,412, 000 into various projects into various projects in 2025.

The projects include the installation of eight transformers in areas with increasing load demands, upgrading of five lower capacity transformers to higher capacity ones, and 40 network improvement and extension projects.

This was made known by the Regional Manager, Ing. Emmanuel Appoe at a media engagement in Koforidua in the Eastern region.

He said these projects had ensured that ECG customers enjoyed stable power supply during the year.

“The region is also implementing the Voltage Improvement and Technical, VIT Project, a flagship project that is aimed at minimizing the impact of power outages in the various operational”Ing.Appoe said.

He said 14 Districts are benefiting from the VIT Project and when completed the maintenance teams will benefit from the technology to isolate faults that would have caused power outage to wider areas in the past.

Ing. Appoe said the Eastern Regional office is implementing the Loss Reduction Project, LRP in seven Districts, namely, Koforidua, Tafo, Nkawkaw, Suhum, Kibi, Asamankese and Oda. Asesewa District is the eighth district where the project is being piloted pending approval for full implementation.

“Under the LRP Project, some 69thousand and 33 prepaid meters have been installed in the seven districts.”he said.

Ing. Appoe noted that the Region was able to recover over one point five million cedis from all forms of illegalities.

They include 33-meter by-passes, 37-meter tampering, and 47 unauthorised service connections.

These were uncovered through Revenue Protection monitoring activities that were aimed at reducing the commercial losses.

“It is our hope to improve on their services to customers by putting in more efforts to ensure that power supply is stable.”Ing.Appoe noted.

The Regional Manager however appealed to customers to pay their bills promptly and desist from all forms of illegalities to enable the Company serve them better.
