Renowned Ghanaian artist and Chief Executive Officer of Red Clay, Ibrahim Mahama, has publicly spoken out following an alleged assault involving members of a special police unit in Tamale.
Addressing a press conference in Tamale, Mahama detailed his account of the incident, which he says occurred during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, a time when many residents had gathered for prayers, leading to heavy traffic congestion in parts of the city.
According to him, the confrontation began as a misunderstanding in traffic near a prayer ground around the Mariam Hotel area. He alleged that tensions escalated quickly into a heated argument between himself and members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Black Maria.”
Mahama further claimed that the leader of the team, Bawah Abdul Jalil, attempted to slap him during the exchange, after which he was physically assaulted by some members of the group.
The artist reported that he sustained multiple injuries during the incident, including dental damage that led to the loss of a tooth and further complications with two others. He was subsequently rushed to Habana Hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged. His uncle, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, is also said to have suffered injuries during the altercation.
Despite these claims, the Special Operations Team has denied any involvement in the alleged assault. Bawah Abdul Jalil has maintained that although his team was present in Tamale for the festive period, they did not engage in any such incident.
He suggested that the attack may have been carried out by some youth, contradicting Mahama’s account and leaving the matter under investigation and public scrutiny.
