Ramadan discipline must translate into lifelong conduct – Sheikh Ayub Asare

The President of the Heralds of Islamic Message (HIM), Sheikh Ayub Ofosuhene Asare, has called on Muslims to sustain the discipline and spiritual growth cultivated during Ramadan beyond the fasting period.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (20 March), Sheikh Asare described Ramadan as a period of sacrifice, self-control and spiritual renewal, stressing that its true value lies in long-term behavioural change.

“Fasting is not just about abstaining from food and water. It is about transforming the individual—spiritually and physically—so that one lives a more righteous life,” he said.

He explained that the essence of fasting, as prescribed in the Qur’an, is to cultivate piety and strengthen a believer’s relationship with God, adding that this discipline should reflect in everyday actions after Ramadan.

“If you were able to control yourself during Ramadan—avoiding wrongdoing and committing to prayer—then that discipline must continue. That is the true success of fasting,” he noted.

Sheikh Asare emphasised the importance of consistency in worship, particularly the observance of daily prayers, describing them as a safeguard against immoral behaviour.

He further urged Muslims to embody the teachings of Islam in their interactions with others, including respect for parents, kindness to neighbours, and support for the vulnerable.

“True faith is seen in how we treat people and how we contribute to society. Worship must translate into action,” he said.

Addressing broader societal issues, he called for stronger moral guidance for young people and stressed the role of religious leaders in shaping responsible citizens.

He also highlighted Ghana’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance, urging Muslims and people of other faiths to continue coexisting peacefully.

“Our forefathers lived in harmony despite differences in belief. We must preserve that tolerance and avoid division,” he said.

Sheikh Asare added that national development depends on both moral integrity and responsible leadership, calling on leaders to act in the interest of all citizens.

He concluded by encouraging Muslims to uphold righteousness, remain conscious of accountability before God, and use their blessings to benefit society.
