Government commits GHC20m to film development fund to boost creative industry

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, has announced that the government has committed GHC20 million to the Film Development Fund, a move aimed at revitalising Ghana’s film industry.

He made the disclosure during the Ashanti Film Summit, where industry stakeholders convened to discuss strategies for strengthening the sector.

According to Gardiner, the fund is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant step toward providing structured financial support for filmmakers.

The initiative is designed to address longstanding challenges in the industry, particularly limited access to funding for film production and distribution.

The Film Development Fund will support local filmmakers by financing film projects and nurturing creative talent across the country.

It is also expected to enhance production capacity, improve industry standards, and promote professionalism within the sector.

Gardiner emphasised that the fund forms part of broader efforts to position Ghana as a competitive player in the global film market.
