CAF decision will enforce discipline and protect football integrity – Amin Lamptey

Veteran sports journalist Amin Lamptey has defended CAF’s decision to overturn the AFCON final result, describing it as necessary to uphold discipline and protect the integrity of the game.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (18 March), Lamptey argued that football is governed strictly by rules and that Senegal’s actions warranted sanctions.

“We are dealing with football, and football is governed by rules and regulations,” he said.

CAF ruled in favour of Morocco after determining that Senegal breached competition rules by walking off the pitch during the final.

Lamptey maintained that the decision should serve as a deterrent to other teams.

“This is a clarion call… once you know the rules, you must abide by them,” he stressed.

He also highlighted the broader implications for stakeholders, including sponsors, host nations, and the global reputation of African football.

“The credibility of CAF, the sponsors, and the entire continent is on the line,” he said.

Lamptey rejected suggestions that Senegal should pursue an appeal, warning that prolonging the dispute could further damage the country’s image.

“Stretching this issue will only worsen their reputation,” he cautioned.

Instead, he urged the Senegalese Football Federation to focus on internal reforms and strategic public relations to repair its image.

He added that the incident underscores the need for better education of players and coaches on the rules of the game, as well as stronger communication during high-pressure situations.

“This will help ensure such incidents are not repeated,” Lamptey said.
