Organised Labour has called for sweeping reforms in Ghana’s pension system, employment policies, and labour laws, warning of growing inequities and a looming jobs crisis.
Addressing President John Dramani Mahama at a high-level dialogue, Joshua Ansah said the current pension system is failing many retirees, with some receiving less than GHC500 monthly while others earn significantly higher benefits.
He described the disparities as unfair and called for a unified pension system that ensures all workers contribute and benefit equitably.
“We need a reset. Pension unification must happen under your leadership,” he said, adding that pension coverage remains low, with less than a fifth of eligible workers contributing.
Ansah also criticised the government’s decision to move pension oversight to the Finance Ministry without consultation, insisting that pensions should be treated primarily as a welfare issue rather than a fiscal one.
On employment, Organised Labour warned that joblessness remains a major national challenge despite decades of economic growth.
He pointed to overwhelming applications for security service jobs as evidence of limited opportunities, particularly for young people.
The group further raised concerns about weak enforcement of labour laws, alleging that some employers intimidate workers who attempt to unionise and terminate employment without justification.
Organised Labour also opposed plans for private sector participation in the electricity distribution sector, arguing that recent improvements show Ghana can manage its own energy systems without privatisation.
They called on government to prioritise social dialogue, strengthen labour protections, and adopt policies that promote decent work and inclusive economic growth.
