Private security analyst, Emmanuel Kotin has warned against the politicisation of recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
According to him, recruitment into security agencies should not be treated like an ordinary employment opportunity.
Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, he says the process is meant to select people who are committed to serving and protecting the country. “If you look at security agency recruitment, it is not just any other recruitment. We are looking at people who are committed to serve their country,” he said.
Kotin also criticised the perception that recruitment into the security services can be used as an avenue to reward political party supporters. “Security recruitment anywhere in the world has never been an avenue for employment opportunities for party foot soldiers,” he noted.
He added that security should remain neutral and must not be influenced by politics. “Security has no colour. Security has no party,” he stressed.
He further warned that Ghana must be careful about how it manages its security institutions, especially in a time when countries are facing complex and technologically driven threats. According to him, the country must always put forward its most capable and qualified people.
He cautioned that weakening the country’s security institutions through political interference could have serious consequences. “Given what we are doing, it means that if Ghana was to come under any form of attack, we may not be able to defend ourselves,” he said.
Kotin has therefore urged leaders and policymakers to avoid politicising the country’s security system and ensure that the right people are selected for the job “This is the core of our national security architecture. We should not play politics around it,” he added.
