Ashanti Region: gunfire at queen mother’s funeral leaves pregnant teen wounded, baby dead

A 19-year-old pregnant woman was shot during a funeral ceremony in Hiawu Besiase, in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, leaving her unborn child dead, local authorities said on Friday.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday during the burial rites of a queen mother, where gunfire broke out, witnesses said.

The victim, identified as Serwaa Alice, was rushed first to a nearby Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound and later referred to the Nkawie Government Hospital. Overwhelmed by the emergency, the hospital referred her to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

“She bled profusely and was rushed to the hospital. We were told the baby had died inside her,” said the victim’s sister, adding that the woman’s two-year-old child had also been injured and was under medical supervision.

An opinion leader in the community confirmed the death of the unborn child and said that the funeral was being held in the presence of police. One suspect has been arrested, and authorities are continuing investigations to apprehend other culprits.

Asaase News gathers that investigation is ongoing.
