The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate dismissal of the Nanton District Chief Executive (DCE) following the killing of a 35-year-old man, Amadu Ibn Shamtut, during this year’s Independence Day celebrations in Nanton in the Northern Region.
The party argues that the tragic incident reflects a serious failure on the part of the district leadership to maintain law and order during a national event meant to promote unity and patriotism.
Addressing the media, the NPP’s Director of Communications, Yussif Danjumah, described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
According to him, the fatal shooting, allegedly carried out by Cheko Naa Mohammed, popularly known as “Wata,” has heightened fears among residents and exposed lapses in security within the district. He insisted that the DCE must be held accountable for what he described as a breakdown of law and order.
The party also expressed concern about what it called the continued silence of the government of President John Dramani Mahama regarding the incident. Mr. Danjumah said the lack of a strong response from the authorities risks emboldening individuals who engage in violent acts in the community, warning that failure to act decisively could further undermine public confidence in the government’s commitment to security and justice.
Danjumah further recalled a similar incident on October 4, 2025, in which another individual, Ibrahim Seidu, was allegedly shot and killed following what he described as a provocative cultural display in the area.
He claimed the same suspect was linked to that incident as well, and urged the government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the perpetrator or perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
