Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, warned on Monday that escalating conflict in the Middle East could fuel global inflation if it pushes oil prices higher.
Speaking at a symposium hosted by Japan’s finance ministry in Tokyo, Georgieva said a sustained rise in oil prices could quickly feed into global price pressures.
“A 10% increase in oil prices, if persistent through most of the year, would result in a 40-basis-point increase in global inflation,” she said.
Georgieva noted that the global economy was again facing uncertainty as geopolitical tensions intensified.
“We are seeing resilience tested again by the new conflict in the Middle East,” she said.
She urged policymakers around the world to plan for potential shocks and adopt precautionary strategies to cushion their economies.
“My advice to policymakers in this new global environment is think of the unthinkable and prepare for it,” she said.
The IMF chief’s comments come amid rising concerns that the conflict could disrupt energy supplies and complicate efforts by central banks to bring inflation under control.
