From Yaa Asantewaa to Queen Nzinga: GJA president salutes Africa’s brave women

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has celebrated iconic women such as Yaa Asantewaa and Nana Ama’u who have helped in the development of fhe African continent.

Speaking at the launch of Women of Valour – London 2026, on 17 February 2026, on the theme, “The Pursuit of Fearlessness”, at the British High Commissioner’s Residence, he mentioned women such as Yaa Asantewaa of Ghana and Idia of the ancient kingdom of Benin for their contributions to the continent.

“History reminds us that African women have always been the actors of change.
In Ghana, Yaa Asantewaa led the Ashanti war against British colonial rule in 1900, demonstrating extraordinary courage”.

In Angola, Queen Nzinga resisted Portuguese colonisation and expanded her kingdom through strategic leadership.

In Nigeria, Nana Ama’u, championed women education and intellectual empowerment.

In the Ancient Kingdom of Benin, Idia played a decisive role in ensuring political stability and military strategy.
This is the power of women”.

He added that, “these women demonstrated remarkable leadership, courage and resilience, long before modern conversations about women’s empowerment began”.

As reported by Agnes Fynn of Asaase Radio, he also said African women must remember that the future of the continent must be shaped by bold empowered women.
