The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) says it will go ahead with its planned nationwide strike on Monday, 9 March 2026, despite a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) ordering the union to call off the action.
The industrial action stems from delays in implementing a new salary structure and improving the conditions of service for civil and local government workers.
According to the union, government has failed to honour agreements reached in 2019, including two memoranda of understanding related to the proposed salary reforms. The new pay structure was originally scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2025.
The National Labour Commission has, however, asked the union to rescind the strike, citing provisions in the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651).
Under Sections 159 and 160 of the Act, any party intending to embark on strike action must give at least seven days’ notice to the other party and the Commission.
The Commission maintains that the union failed to comply with these requirements, rendering the planned strike unlawful.
The NLC has therefore summoned representatives of CLOGSAG and relevant government officials to appear before it on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, at 2:00 pm to address the dispute.
Despite the Commission’s position, CLOGSAG says the strike will proceed as scheduled.
Public Relations Officer of the association, Edmund Acquaye, confirmed the decision in an interview on Channel One Newsroom.
“The strike is in full effect,” he said.
Acquaye urged members of the association across ministries, departments, agencies and metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to comply with the directive.
“I am entreating all our members wherever they find themselves, right from the Ministries down to the MMDCEs, all agencies that our members find themselves, that come Monday, 9th March, 2026, they should all stay at home and not go to work. We are pressing home and demanding what belongs to us as civil servants.”
