Road users in Kumasi faced temporary diversions on Tuesday (3 March) as the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly closed the main Officers’ Mess Road for the one-week observance of Andrews Kwame Amankwah, father-in-law of National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications officer Sammy Gyamfi.
The closure, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., affected motorists travelling between Santasi Roundabout, Adum, and Danyame.
Alternative routes were provided, including detours via Lancaster Hotel, Ridge Police Station, Veronique Heights, and the ECG road, according to a statement from the KMA.
Special instructions were issued for attendees, including VVIPs, to follow police directions to designated car parks.
The funeral drew leading figures of the NDC, including First Lady Lordina Mahama, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and senior party officials, as well as government appointees, sympathisers, and members of the public.
Mr. Amankwah was killed in a robbery, an incident that has reverberated across the political community.
Authorities said the temporary traffic measures were intended to ensure smooth flow for both mourners and regular commuters, while accommodating security arrangements for high-profile attendees.
