Flights between Ghana and Dubai were cancelled late on Saturday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at the Accra International Airport after escalating military hostilities in the Middle East forced several Gulf states to close their airspace.
Ghana Airports Company officials said the disruption began at about 1915 GMT when Emirates flight EK 788, scheduled to depart Accra for Dubai, was cancelled without immediate rescheduling.
The suspension follows widespread airspace closures across the Gulf after Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military facilities and regional assets, according to security sources and flight tracking data.
Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates have all imposed restrictions on civilian air traffic.
Airline monitoring services showed major flight corridors across the region largely deserted as carriers diverted or suspended operations to avoid conflict zones.
The aviation disruption comes amid a sharp escalation in tensions after U.S. President Donald J. Trump said the United States and Israel had carried out a major strike on Iran, claiming that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed.
Iran’s foreign minister said earlier that the supreme leader was alive, state media reported.
In Dubai, local authorities reported an incident involving a fire at a building in the Palm Jumeirah area, while air defence systems were activated to intercept incoming drones and missiles.
Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, has been operating under partial closure, officials said.
Emirates advised passengers travelling within the next 72 hours to check their flight status online, warning that schedules remained under review as the security situation continued to evolve.
“Airlines operating through the Gulf region are continuing to assess their services,” the carrier said in a statement, urging passengers to contact travel agents or airlines directly for rebooking or refunds.
For Ghana, the cancellation has temporarily severed a critical transit link connecting West Africa to Asia, Europe and North America, underscoring the global ripple effects of the conflict.
Regional governments and international aviation authorities said further disruptions could not be ruled out if hostilities continue.
