Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko, has called for renewed commitment to African unity and diaspora engagement, urging the continent to “become borderless now” in the spirit of the continent’s founding fathers.
Speaking at the Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd Black History Month Summit held at the W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture, Darko highlighted the relevance of Pan-Africanism 69 years after Ghana’s independence.
“After COVID, we saw Africa’s resilience in a critical moment, and I believe our conversations about unification must continue,” he said, acknowledging the presence of youth at the event.
“The conversation should not be just about us. We need to include the future as well.”
Representing the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, Darko emphasised the government’s vision of the diaspora as an active partner in nation-building. He described Ghana’s 17th Region — a policy initiative for diaspora engagement — as a platform for structured collaboration in enterprise, education, and cultural exchange.
“Too long, our relationship with the diaspora has been sentimental rather than systematic,” he said. “Our duty is to move it from symbolism to structure, from nostalgia to policy, from occasional engagement to intentional institutional collaboration.”
Darko drew historical parallels between Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and W. E. B. Du Bois, noting that their Pan-African partnership was both practical and strategic, creating archives, convening congresses, and shaping governance. He urged that the same spirit guide present and future initiatives linking Africa with its global diaspora.
“Black history is not confined to the past,” Darko concluded. “It is written daily in policy, in partnership, and in perseverance. May this summit inspire not only remembrance, but renewal.”
The summit, described by organisers as a “Summit and Night of Legacy,” features lectures, panel discussions, and cultural performances, and is being streamed live to audiences worldwide.
