Ho Technical University has formally admitted 3,891 new students into its academic community during its 33rd matriculation ceremony, with authorities urging discipline, digital skills development and environmental responsibility as key pillars of university life.
The ceremony, held at the G.M. Afeti Auditorium in Ho, welcomed 2,321 males and 1,538 females out of 5,677 applicants. The intake included both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as two physically challenged students, a move officials said reflected the institution’s commitment to inclusiveness.
Proceedings were held in two sessions, covering faculties in applied sciences and technology, the built and natural environment, art and design, engineering, applied social sciences, business, and the graduate school.
Registrar Dr Christopher K. Amehoe administered the matriculation oath before Vice-Chancellor Ben Q. Honyenuga formally declared the students members of the university.
Addressing the freshers, Honyenuga described matriculation as a defining milestone rather than a mere formality, urging students to uphold discipline, integrity and academic focus throughout their studies.
He said the university was gaining international recognition, citing recent rankings that placed HTU among Ghana’s top universities and the country’s leading technical university, as well as high marks for sustainability performance.
The vice-chancellor encouraged students to adopt environmentally friendly habits, including reducing plastic use and respecting the campus’s green spaces, stressing that “saving the environment is saving human health”.
He also emphasised the need for entrepreneurship and digital literacy, describing technology skills as essential for survival in an era shaped by automation and artificial intelligence. The university’s learning management system, he said, had been integrated into teaching to prepare students as responsible digital citizens.
Student representatives pledged to abide by university rules while seeking quality teaching and career guidance.
University officials, deans and department heads attended the event, which marked the formal start of academic life for the new cohort.
