Sefa eyes international breakout with new single “Busybody”, praises Stonebwoy’s support for women in music

Ghanaian Afrobeats and Afro-pop singer-songwriter Sefa, known off stage as Sefadzi Abena Amesu, says she is deliberately repositioning her sound for audiences beyond Ghana as she prepares to release her latest single, Busybody.

Speaking on the Rush Hour show with Elvis Crystal on Asaase Radio on Tuesday (24 February), the singer described the past months as a period of quiet rebuilding after stepping away from the spotlight.

“It’s been amazing so far. God has been good,” she said. “When you’re off the radar for some time and you come back, you can’t just come back like ‘hey, I’m back’. You have to give them something different.”

New chapter after Black Avenue

Sefa confirmed she is now operating independently after leaving Black Avenue Muzik and working with a smaller personal team and manager.

“Apart from God, I have a team that I work with… people who have always been in my corner,” she said, expressing gratitude to media platforms that have continued to support her journey.

The singer hinted that the new phase of her career will involve experimentation and calculated risks aimed at crossing borders.

“I see it going out of Ghana actually. I want to try something out of my comfort zone and give it my all,” she added.

‘Busybody’ and Stonebwoy collaboration

Her upcoming single Busybody features dancehall star Stonebwoy, a collaboration she says has been long overdue.

She praised Stonebwoy for consistently supporting female acts in the industry.

“He’s been so supportive to all of us in the industry, especially the females, giving out features here and there,” she said. “We’ve always wanted to do something, and now I think it’s the perfect time.”

According to her, the song explores modern relationships and dating dynamics, with both artists offering male and female perspectives.

“Love is a verb… you have to show it,” she explained. “It’s me talking for the women and him talking for the men, but in all, we stand for each other.”

Industry support improving for women

On the broader state of Ghana’s music industry, Sefa noted that conditions for women have improved compared to when she started, though more progress is needed.

“Now people are beginning to notice our talents more and what we bring to the table. The support has been great, but I think we can still do more,” she said.

She also urged women to prioritise their safety and avoid situations where they may be exploited, stressing that women should not be treated as “easy targets.”

Gratitude to fans

Wrapping up the interview, the singer thanked Asaase Radio and her fan base for their continued loyalty and encouraged listeners to stream the new single upon release.

“We have a brand-new hot one out. It will be out tomorrow on all streaming platforms. Make sure to spread the word,” she said.

Busybody is expected to mark the start of what Sefa describes as a bold new era aimed at expanding her reach beyond Ghana’s borders.
