Eastern Region: Fire guts warehouse at Akyem Oda, millions of cedis lost

A devastating fire has destroyed a warehouse stocked with goods worth millions of cedis at Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The incident, which occurred behind the Akyem Oda supermarket, completely gutted the warehouse and damaged several nearby shops belonging to petty traders who deal in men and women’s sandals, clothing, picture frames, and other assorted goods.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly to a distress call and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

Victims count their losses

Madam Joyce Dompreh, whose shop is located close to the warehouse, told the media that she was at church when she received news of the fire outbreak.

“By the time I got here, everything had been destroyed. We have lost goods worth thousands of cedis,” she lamented.

She commended the Ghana Fire Service for their swift intervention, noting that their efforts helped prevent further destruction.

However, she expressed deep concern over the severe economic impact the fire has had on affected traders.

Fire officer raises concern over crowd interference

The Birim Central Municipal Fire Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Patrick Ampadu, who led the firefighting team, expressed worry about the large crowd that gathered at the scene.

“The crowd made it very difficult for our personnel to operate effectively. We appeal to the public to always give firefighters enough space to work during emergencies,” he stated.

He further urged residents and business owners to take preventive measures against electrical fires, advising regular inspection of wiring systems, avoidance of overloading sockets, and ensuring that electrical faults are promptly repaired.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
