The Member of Parliament for the Savelugu Constituency, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, has reaffirmed her commitment to female education with the launch of a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting brilliant but needy female students.
The intervention seeks to remove financial barriers that prevent many young girls in deprived communities from pursuing higher education and achieving their full potential.
The initiative, christened the Yooyili Pag’Dede Foundation, is designed to provide financial assistance to qualified female students within the constituency. It will focus particularly on girls who have demonstrated academic excellence but face economic hardships that threaten their academic progression.
The foundation is expected to cover educational expenses and offer the necessary encouragement to help beneficiaries climb the academic ladder.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, who also serves as the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Gender, Children and Social Welfare, expressed concern over the low transition rate of girls from senior high school to tertiary institutions. She described the situation as worrying and stressed the urgent need for deliberate policies and targeted interventions to reverse the trend.
She noted that for far too long, young girls in society have been left behind in the development process due to poverty, early marriages, and limited opportunities.
According to her, inclusive development can only be achieved when women and girls are empowered through education.
She emphasised that as the representative of the people, her priority is to ensure that no one in the constituency is left behind.
The Savelugu legislator also assured the public that the foundation would operate without discrimination. She emphasised that all qualified applicants would be considered regardless of their political affiliation, stressing that education and development should transcend partisan lines. She further pledged to sustain the initiative to ensure that more girls gain access to higher education in the years ahead.
Also present was the former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Adam Mohammed Amin and the member of parliament for Tolon Habib Iddrisu. In his remarks former finance minister called on the electorate to support leaders capable of delivering tangible development.
He encouraged voters to prioritise competence and transformational leadership over partisan considerations, noting that when the right leaders are given the mandate, development will trickle down to benefit the most vulnerable in society.
