The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 20% increase in lorry fares effective Saturday, 21 February 2026.
In a press release issued on Monday,16 February, the group said the upward adjustment has been necessitated by the continuous rise in operational and maintenance costs faced by drivers across the country.
According to the alliance, drivers have in recent months experienced sharp increases in the prices of spare parts and engine components, engine oil and servicing costs, DVLA charges and other regulatory fees, vehicle insurance premiums, tyres and related accessories, as well as utility costs including water and electricity.
The group cited examples of what it described as steep hikes in key vehicle components. It said the price of a Toyota Vitz gearbox has risen from GHC4,000 to GHC7,000, while a radiator now costs GHC1,000, up from GHC600. A carburettor, it said, has increased from GHC800 to GHC1,000.
It further indicated that the cost of a Sprinter engine has jumped from GHC15,000 to GHC40,000, while a Nissan Almera engine has increased from GHC10,000 to GHC15,000.
The alliance said drivers continue to work long hours under challenging conditions, often returning home with little or no profit. As self-employed individuals, it noted, drivers do not receive government support and must bear all operational costs independently.
It acknowledged that the adjustment will result in higher transport costs for commuters nationwide but maintained that the increment is necessary to sustain operations and ensure the continued provision of reliable transport services.
The statement was signed by the National Organiser, Ishmael Chobal; the National Public Relations Officer, Kwaku Boateng; and the Assistant National Relations Officer, Asare Opoku.
The group appealed to transport operators to comply with the new fares and called on passengers to show understanding and patience during what it described as a difficult period.
