Every 14 February, couples across Ghana join the rest of the world to celebrate Valentine’s Day — a season of flowers, dinners, surprises and, most importantly, chocolate. But in 2026, love comes at a price many wallets are struggling to afford.
The rising cost of living continues to squeeze households, with higher prices for food, transport, housing, electricity and other essentials leaving many people with less to spend on extras. For some, the usual Valentine’s excitement has been replaced with careful budgeting and second thoughts at the checkout counter.
Still, if there’s one thing Valentine’s Day has shown over the years, it’s that affection doesn’t disappear when the economy tightens.
If anything, it becomes more creative.
Across markets and shops, vendors are stocked with the familiar symbols of the season — cards, flowers, perfumes, candies and, uniquely to Ghana, chocolate. National Chocolate Day, celebrated alongside Valentine’s, continues to encourage the consumption of locally made cocoa products while giving the occasion a distinctly Ghanaian flavour.
Yet beyond the commercial buzz lies a simpler truth: love is not measured by the price tag.
Psychologists and social researchers have long described gift-giving as a universal human behaviour — a way of expressing care, strengthening bonds and building relationships. The value is not in how expensive the gift is, but in how thoughtful it feels.
And that’s good news for anyone feeling the pinch this year.
Affordable ways to celebrate love
Celebrating Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean luxury restaurants or costly presents.
