GES bans three Eastern Region SHSs for two years over violence at Super Zonal Sports

The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has imposed a two-year ban on Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH), New Juaben Senior High School (NJUSCO), and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School (NSUTECH) following violent incidents during the 2026 Super Zonal Sports Competition.

The event, held from February 4 to 6 at the Koforidua Sports Stadium, was disrupted by acts of hooliganism, a stabbing incident, and an alleged gang rape.

In a statement dated 11 February 2026, and signed by the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Asantewa Owusu (PhD), GES expressed deep concern over what it described as serious misconduct by students of the affected schools.

Citing Section 2.17 of the GES Code of Conduct, which addresses physical and psychological violence, as well as Articles VII and VIII of the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association (ERSCSA) Code of Discipline, the Directorate announced that the three schools are barred from organizing, participating in, or attending all sporting and related activities for two years.

The ban, which takes immediate effect, covers sports, quizzes, debates, cadetting, and entertainment programmes at the school, zonal, and regional levels.

In addition, each school has been fined GHC500 and will be required to cover the cost of any damage to property or injuries sustained, with the final amount to be determined by a designated committee.

GES Headquarters, in a separate statement signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, condemned the incidents and provided further details.

Preliminary reports indicate that a SECTECH student was stabbed about 200 metres from the competition venue while out to lunch with a friend.

He was allegedly attacked by students from NJUSCO. The victim received medical treatment and has been discharged, while one suspect has been arrested and is assisting police investigations.

In another incident, a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a nearby bush.

Two suspects are currently in police custody, while a third suspect, said to be an old student of SECTECH and the alleged ringleader, is on the run.

GES confirmed that the victim has received medical care and is undergoing counselling and psychosocial support from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

Management stressed that inter-school sports are intended to foster discipline, unity, teamwork, and talent development, and should not be associated with violence or criminal behaviour.

GES assured the public that all individuals found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established procedures.

Stakeholders have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
