President Barrow inaugurates ECOWAS electricity access projects in The Gambia

President Adama Barrow has inaugurated electricity infrastructure completed under the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Access Project (ECOWAS-REAP) in The Gambia.

The commissioning forms part of a series of inaugurations being undertaken by the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines in collaboration with the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC).

The exercise began on 7 February 2026 at Njongon and is scheduled to continue until 15 February across five locations in the country. Additional electricity access projects under the ECOWAS-REAP framework are also expected to be inaugurated during the period.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Barrow described the project as an unprecedented achievement for The Gambia. He said the initiative, supported by sustained efforts and partnerships with development partners, is expected to improve living conditions, particularly for rural communities.

According to the President, The Gambia’s electricity access rate has increased from 73% to 90% through the ECOWAS-REAP intervention. He added that about 52,000 new households have been connected to the national grid as a result of the project.

The ECOWAS Regional Electricity Access Project is part of broader efforts to expand reliable and affordable electricity across West Africa.
