The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has ordered all municipal and district Chief Executives and Coordinating Directors to strictly enforce sanitation bylaws throughout the region.
This directive comes in light of the tragic 2024 cholera outbreak, which claimed 16 lives and affected over 1,700 individuals.
During a working visit to the Nzema East Municipality, Minister Nelson stressed the importance of vigilance against cholera, stating that under his tenure, the region must not experience such a health crisis again.
“Let me caution that in 2024 we had incidents of cholera under my watch. I do not want to hear anything about another cholera outbreak. When we have such situations, we will have to sit down and talk because it will be as if we did not know,” he stated, underscoring the need for proper sanitary practices.
A strong emphasis on adhering to sanitation practices to maintain public health.
Nelson highlighted concerns about unauthorized structures, pointing out a case where wetlands were being filled.
“We need to ensure that structures are sighted in the right place,” he noted, questioning the assembly’s awareness and responsibility.
The Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive, Herbert Kua Dickson, reported significant challenges undermining effective service delivery, including a severe shortage of office space and resources.
He also mentioned departments operating in congested and inadequate facilities, negatively impacting productivity and staff morale.
“These constraints collectively affect staff morale, slow down administrative processes, and limit the assembly’s ability to deliver timely and quality service to the public,” Dickson explained.
This initiative and its challenges reveal a commitment to improving public health and service efficiency in the Western Region.
