A security analyst, Nana Kweku Ofori Atta, has commended President John Dramani Mahama’s administration for what he describes as a strong first-year performance, citing improvements in economic management, governance, diplomacy and anti-corruption efforts.
In an assessment of the government’s first year in office, Ofori Atta said the administration has shown encouraging signs across key sectors, earning praise from what he called “independent voices” observing the country’s political and economic direction.
“As a citizen and not a spectator, I admire the first year of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration,” he noted, pointing specifically to gains in the economy, international diplomacy, prudent management of public expenditure, national security and efforts to address corruption concerns.
He said the progress signals promising prospects for the country, but cautioned that sustaining momentum will be critical to achieving long-term national transformation.
“The chances are promising; we dare not miss it,” he stated.
Despite the commendation, the analyst urged the government to implement deeper structural reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and transparency within state institutions.
Among his recommendations is the establishment of a more sophisticated accountability and justice system to independently evaluate government operations and ensure integrity in public service.
He also called for improvements in data governance, arguing that Ghana should, after nearly seven decades of independence, be able to manage its own reliable national data systems.
According to him, the government should introduce comprehensive biodata systems across revenue-generating institutions to curb duplication, plug leakages and reduce the risk of financial misappropriation.
Ofori Atta further proposed the creation of a centralised national database to protect citizens’ information, backed by locally developed software to enhance data privacy and cybersecurity.
He additionally advocated for the formation of an independent financial forensic auditing and IT body, working alongside the Auditor-General’s Department, to accelerate investigations and improve the prosecution of corruption-related cases.
Such an institution, he said, would help eliminate common bureaucratic delays and strengthen transparency in public financial management.
Beyond institutional reforms, the analyst advised the President to remain open to dissenting opinions.
He warned that excessive praise could be counterproductive, stressing that constructive criticism is essential for effective leadership.
“Listen to the things that may not sweet you as well. The praise singers might be dangerously pretentious,” he cautioned.
He also urged the President to take firm decisions where necessary to protect his administration’s legacy.
Ofori Atta concluded by congratulating the government on its first-year achievements and expressed hope that the administration would build on its gains in the remaining years of its mandate.
