Petty traders at Kumasi’s Kejetia Market staged a demonstration on Tuesday, accusing market management of removing them from trading spaces after collecting fees to allow them operate during the Christmas season.
The traders said each of them paid 3,000 to 6,000 Ghana cedis to managers of the market late last year and were permitted to sell along access routes inside the facility to ease congestion during the festive rush.
According to the traders, the arrangement was abruptly terminated after Christmas, with officials ordering them to vacate the area and offering no clear explanation or alternative space to continue their businesses.
“It has been almost one month now. We have not been allowed to return and nobody is giving us answers,” one of the protesters said.
The nearly 400 traders said the loss of income has left them struggling to meet basic family expenses, adding that many of them now remain at home without any means of earning a living.
The group is demanding a refund of the money paid or a reinstatement of their trading spaces.
They also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene, alleging unfair treatment by the new interim management of the market.
Kejetia Market authorities were not immediately available for comment.
It comes at a time the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly race to inaugurate a board to steer to “ensure smooth operation of the market.”
