Ghana scholarship chief backs NIB probe, denies UK scholarship sales

The Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to refer allegations of sold overseas scholarships to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), describing the move as a necessary step to protect the integrity of the system.

The investigation follows claims aired by New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Kofi Ofosu Nkansah on Sompa FM that some state institutions allegedly sold scholarship opportunities to politically connected individuals to study in the United Kingdom.

Rebuttal

Asafo-Agyei strongly rejected the allegations, insisting that no scholarship awards for studies in the UK were issued under his leadership.

“Under my tenure as Director-General, not a single scholarship has been awarded for studies in the United Kingdom,” he said in a Facebook post, adding that the policy had been formally communicated to UK institutions.

He said the claims ignored ongoing reforms aimed at restoring transparency and fairness in the scholarship system.

Reforms

Asafo-Agyei also blamed past administrative failures for irregular awards allegedly issued as recently as March 2025, saying the previous Akufo-Addo administration left the sector vulnerable to abuse.

Under the current government’s “resetting agenda,” he said scholarships are now allocated strictly on merit, with zero tolerance for corruption or political influence.

He welcomed the NIB probe as an opportunity to expose wrongdoing and ensure accountability across state institutions.

“The era where the rich, connected and influential cornered scholarships is over,” Asafo-Agyei said.

“For every act of plunder against the nation, full accountability will be demanded,” he said.
