Dr Abdul Jalilu Ateku, political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, says the NPP’s recent flagbearer primaries have reinforced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s standing within the party, positioning him as a dominant figure ahead of the 2028 elections.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (3 February), Ateku highlighted Bawumia’s track record as vice president and his public service record as key factors contributing to his selection and popularity. “He is among the most marketable figures in the party,” Ateku said.
The lecturer described the party’s internal decision-making as strategic, noting that delegates’ votes reflect a calculated balance of power.
He also emphasised that while the running mate selection remains premature, party strategists are likely considering regional, generational, and gender factors to maintain electoral balance.
Ateku stressed the importance of party unity, urging the flagbearer and party leadership to reconcile internal factions ahead of the general election.
“Despite his popularity, Bawumia must work to bring together other candidates and party leaders to strengthen cohesion and avoid internal divisions,” he said.
The analyst concluded that Bawumia’s victory, coupled with a strategic reconciliation effort, provides the NPP with an opportunity to present a united front in the 2028 polls.
