All members of Otumfuo-named police unit promoted after Akwasidae parade

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted all members of a special all-female police unit known as the Police Royal Ladies following their ceremonial appearances in honour of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The group, named after the Ashanti king, recently mounted two guards of honour for Otumfuo — one at the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra on 6 January and another during the first Akwasidae festival of the year at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on 1 February.

Speaking at the Akwasidae celebration, Yohuno said the parades were meant to express the police service’s appreciation for Otumfuo’s unprecedented visit to police headquarters.

“We have these ladies called royal ladies. We named them after Otumfuo. They have come to grace the occasion and to make the first of its kind in the Manhyia Palace, and also attended by many of our POMAB members here this afternoon,” Yuhonu said.

He added that the unit had distinguished itself through hard work and commitment.

“I wish to announce to Otumfuo that these ladies have been working very hard. They have distinguished themselves and are only available to do anything possible to make Ghana proud, and for this being the first of its kind to honour Otumfuo at the National Police headquarters and also being the first of its kind to visit the Manhyia Palace, the police administration decided to promote them to the next rank,” he said.

The Police Royal Ladies are a ceremonial unit within the Ghana Police Service and the promotions take effect immediately, according to police officials.
