Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for unity and a fresh start within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer as the beginning of a rebuilding process toward the 2028 general election.
Addressing delegates and party leaders after the presidential primary, Akufo-Addo opened his remarks by framing the moment as a turning point for the party.
“Tonight is a night of renewal,” he said, before congratulating Bawumia on what he called a decisive win.
“To the over 200,000 delegates who turned out in strength and unity, you have spoken clearly. You have spared us the uncertainty of a runoff and given our party a head start to victory in 2028.”
Akufo-Addo said the outcome affirmed confidence in Bawumia’s leadership, citing his eight years as vice-president.
“You have affirmed that the eight years in which Dr Bawumia served as vice president laid a strong foundation for our future contest and that he’s the leader with vision, experience and competence to return the New Patriotic Party to government and Ghana to greater heights,” he said.
But he cautioned that the victory was only the first step.
“The victory tonight is only the beginning. The task before us is to turn this momentum into a movement. We must bring everyone together — every region, every constituency, every volunteer, every supporter — into a single unstoppable team.”
The former president urged the party to use the long lead time before the next election to reorganise and strengthen its structures.
“This year is for healing wounds, reorganising our structures, and strengthening our parliamentary front line,” he said, adding that “every week must count” and “every constituency must be involved.”
Akufo-Addo also called for an end to internal divisions.
“Let us end the era of factions. From constituency to region to national office, our purpose is singular.”
Drawing on his long working relationship with Bawumia, whom he selected as his running mate nearly two decades ago, Akufo-Addo vouched for the flagbearer’s character and loyalty.
“I know his mind, his character, his love for Ghana, and his appetite for hard work. He is loyal to party and country.”
He pledged his personal support to the party’s campaign efforts and said the NPP would present what he described as a clear and credible plan to grow the economy, create jobs and protect vulnerable citizens.
“My commitment tonight is simple. I’ll devote my energy to supporting efforts to unite our party, re-energising our base and earning anew the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
“The journey to 2028 begins tonight. And with God’s grace, the MPP will move forward stronger, together and more hopeful than ever.”
