The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has hailed the arrival of the MV CSB Years, the largest bulk carrier with a capacity of 300,000 tons, to dock at any port in West Africa as a significant milestone in Ghana’s port operations.
During the welcoming ceremony at Takoradi Port, Nelson stated that the arrival of this magnificent vessel represents “an extraordinary achievement not only for the Western Region but for our nation and the entire sub-region.”
Mr Nelson emphasised that the docking of this vessel demonstrates Ghana’s ambition to become a premier maritime and trade hub in Africa. He noted that the event showcases the tangible results of a clear vision rooted in industrial transformation, economic diversification, and the collaboration between public policy and private enterprise.
“The success story did not emerge overnight. It is the outcome of leadership, foresight, and collaboration,” he remarked, acknowledging the visionary leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, whose commitment to Ghana’s trade and infrastructure continues to yield positive results.
The minister expressed gratitude to the Ghana Manganese Company, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and Cosco Shipping for their strategic partnership. According to Mr Nelson, this collaboration has not only expanded Ghana’s export capacity but has also elevated the Port of Takoradi to a global standard for maritime excellence and operational efficiency.
He believes that the docking of the MV CSB Years, along with improvements in port capacity, will lead to:
• Increased export volumes
• Enhanced revenue
• Expanded economic activity
Nelson stated, “It will attract investments, create employment, and strengthen supporting infrastructure across our community.”
In his address, Nelson conveyed a message of confidence: “This ceremony sends a message of confidence and assurance: Ghana’s ports are modern, open, and competitive. Our facilities, workforce, and governance reflect a country ready to engage the world with professionalism and purpose.”
The arrival of the MV CSB Years aligns with Ghana Manganese Company’s ambitious target of achieving 10 million tons in exports by 2026.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, industry leaders, international shipping partners, and key stakeholders from the maritime and logistics sectors, all gathering to celebrate this historic achievement for Ghana’s maritime industry.
