Nigerian actor Kunle Remi criticises Lagos experience after IShowSpeed’s Africa tour

Nigerian actor Kunle Remi has criticised Nigeria’s image following the recent visit of popular American streamer IShowSpeed, describing the country as the “worst” destination the internet personality has visited so far during his Africa tour.

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, visited Nigeria last week as part of a tour across several African countries, drawing large crowds and widespread online attention.

Reacting to clips from the visit, Remi took to Instagram to compare the streamer’s experience in Lagos with his stops in other African countries, expressing concern over what he described as the erosion of the city’s cultural identity.

“After watching IShowSpeed’s journey so far, Nigeria is the worst on my own list,” the actor wrote. “We just really stripped Lagos naked. No be say anything dey under the clothes before sha.”

Remi lamented what he said was the dominance of nightlife, counterfeit alcohol and street begging, arguing that these had overshadowed Lagos’s cultural heritage.

“Seems like we’ve lost the essence of culture. Our truth! All we have is fake drinks, club & beggy beggy skills,” he added.

In contrast, IShowSpeed’s visit to Ghana has been widely praised on social media for highlighting the country’s cultural depth and tourism appeal. During his stay, the streamer toured several landmarks, including the Asenema Waterfall in Akropong, Independence Square in Accra, and the Bukom Boxing Arena, showcasing Ghana’s sporting history.

He also sampled local cuisine, including Ghanaian jollof rice, during a live stream, and received a traditional naming ceremony in Akropong in the Eastern Region.

The warm reception in Ghana has sparked conversations about the role of digital influencers in shaping international perceptions and boosting tourism.

A representative of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) said the agency plans to build on the momentum created by IShowSpeed’s visit.

“The GTA is already doing a lot and will also capitalise on the momentum generated by IShowSpeed’s visit to attract more tourists and investors to Ghana, highlighting the country’s unique cultural and natural attractions,” she said.
